ATHLETE OATH
“Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”
Eunice Kennedy Shriver jotted down the Special Olympics athlete oath on the morning of July 20, 1968 — just ahead of the opening of the very first Special Olympics International Games. She recited at a brief Opening Ceremony at Chicago’s Soldier Field before the start of competition.
These words were spoken by Roman gladiators as they entered the arena, facing the greatest battle of their lives. Our athletes recite the oath at the Opening Ceremonies of each competition to remind everyone, themselves included, that they are part of a brave tradition and that the goal is to compete with their whole effort and to exhibit bravery by pushing themselves to ever greater heights.
COACH’S OATH
“In the name of all coaches, we shall follow written and verbal instructions of Special Olympics officials at all times, have our athletes at the appropriate events and activities at the proper time and abide by the rules and policies, in the spirit of sportsmanship”
Excellence · Inclusion · Integrity · Respect · Trust the Team
The Core Values of Special Olympics Delaware embody our culture, spirit and commitment to do our best at all times. These values guide and inform our collaboration, our innovative programming, the design and delivery of meaningful opportunities and our promotion of understanding, acceptance and inclusion for the benefit of people with and without intellectual disabilities.
“The Wilmington Wizards are an amazing team due to the athletes commitment, hard work, camaraderie and team work in all our sports. They are dedicated to training for each sport and working together to compete to the best of their ability. They show great sportsmanship during competition and value the Special Olympics athletes oath.“
