The mission of Special Olympics Delaware is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for more than 4,200 children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Today, Special Olympics stands as a leader in the field of intellectual disability and has sharpened the focus on its mission as not just “nice,” but critical; not just as a sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities, but also as an effective catalyst for social change.
The Special Olympics movement unlocks the joy of sport to inspire people to open their minds to human giftedness, to accept, include and value people with intellectual disabilities in all aspects of life, and thereby unite people in a shared belief of a more just and welcoming world.
The Core Values of Special Olympics Delaware embody our culture, spirit, and commitment to do our best at all times. These values guide and inform our collaboration, our innovative programming, the design and delivery of meaningful opportunities, and our promotion of understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for the benefit of people with and without intellectual disabilities.
We strive to embrace every opportunity to continually improve the program and experience by ensuring it is safe and of the highest quality.
We believe in honoring difference, individuality and treating others the way you would want to be treated.
We strive to always do what is right, even when no one is looking, and to be truthful at all times.
We believe that diverse backgrounds and experiences make us stronger. By respecting every individual and valuing our differences – in thought, style, cultures, ethnicity and experience – we contribute fully to the organization’s success.
Trust the Team
We believe that the best outcomes are achieved when people work together across the entire organization. We believe great teams are built on promoting trust and open and honest communication in an atmosphere that encourages and respects self-expression and opinions.
