Become a Coach: FAQs

Coaches are an essential part of Special Olympics Delaware. They do much more than teach the skills of a sport. They help athletes build confidence, develop friendships, reach their goals and experience the joy of competition.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need coaching experience?

No! We provide all required training and ongoing support. If you're passionate about helping athletes succeed, we'll teach you everything you need to know.

How much time does coaching require?

Most teams practice 1–2 hours per week for approximately 8 weeks, plus two competitions: a Mid-Season Qualifier and the State Tournament.

How old do I need to be?

Coaches must be at least 15 years old.

Does it cost anything to become a coach?

No. All required training and certification are provided free of charge.

How long does the certification process take?

The online training courses typically take about an hour to complete. Background checks for volunteers ages 18 and older may take a few additional days to process.

When will I hear from someone?

Once you've submitted your Coach Interest Form, a member of our team will contact you to discuss available coaching opportunities & schedules then they will connect you with the appropriate Area or Sport Director.
