
Volunteer Certification
Coaches – Team Assistants – Unified Partners – Photographers – General and Registration Volunteers
All Adults (18 and over) wishing to serve as a Sport Volunteer or a General Volunteers must be certified as a Class “A” Volunteer. This includes coaches, team assistants, unified partners, photographers, office assistants, registration volunteers and other general volunteers.
Class “A” Certification includes a background check and the completion of the Protective Behaviors Online Training
Youth Volunteers (under age 18) must complete a Youth Certification that includes two letters of recommendation from non-family members.
Steps to Complete Certification
Adults (ages 18 and up)
Step 1. Complete your volunteer profile. You will be asked to create a username and password for the Cervis site used to manage SODE volunteers.
Be sure to have the following items available before you begin, as you cannot save your work and return later.
- Driver’s License or State ID
- Social Security Number
- Emergency Contact – name and phone #
- Profile Photo – passport style, head, and shoulders only (no larger than 5mb)
- Two References – names and contact details

Step 2. Complete the online Protective Behaviors Training. You will be asked to create a separate user id (email address) and password for this training on the SO Learn site.
Step 3. Background Screening. Once steps 1 and 2 are submitted and approved, the Special Olympics Delaware office will begin a background screening.
Step 4. Receive Certification ID. Once your background screening is complete and you are cleared, you will be considered certified as a Class “A” Volunteer. The Special Olympics office will notify you of your certification and mail you a Class “A” ID badge,
Youth (under age 18)
Step 1. Complete the online Youth Volunteer Application Form.
Before you begin you should know:
- You will be asked to provide two Letters of Reference that are not from a parent or family member.
- You will need to attached a Photo of yourself – headshot/passport style in JPEG format.

Step 3. Once your completed form is submitted and approved, the Special Olympics Delaware office will notify you of your youth volunteer certification and your next steps.
NOTE: The Letter of Reference form is included with the Youth Application. However, if you need to provide new or additional references please use the form below.
